Chinese herbal prescriptions are the most popular mode of treatment in China and can be traced back to 1,000 B.C. Thus, over the last 3,000 years an incredibly rich and powerful therapeutic modality has evolved.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine consists of 5,767 substances derived from plant, animal, and mineral sources. The premise of Chinese herbal medicine is that these substances have energetic properties that can produce dramatic healing effects. Herbs are available in the form of herbal teas, liquid extracts, granular extracts, tablets, capsules, lotions, creams, salves, and poultices.

Individual herbs are rarely prescribed alone in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine. Herbal formulas generally have between 5 and 25 herbs in them. Each herb is chosen for its own specific functions as well as its interaction within the formula. The combination of herbs can treat much more efficiently and completely than a single herb. A carefully balanced herbal prescription is specifically tailored for each person's entire health condition.

At the Southwest Center for Oriental Medicine we use highly potent herbal extracts from our extensive herbal pharmacy. This allows the practitioner to customize formulas rather than using a generic pre-made pill. Our pharmacy is stocked with top quality herbs from a GMP (good manufacturing practice) approved facility that ensures proper identification and extensive testing for heavy metals, bacteria, molds, and pesticides.
